A highly unusual quartz specimen from Piedra Parada, Veracruz, consisting of a classic Veracruz-style quartz crystal coated by fishtail selenite (gypsum). The underlying quartz shows the slender, sharply terminated habit typical of the locality, while the surface is partially enveloped by bladed, twinned selenite crystals forming distinctive fishtail growths.
What makes this specimen exceptional is the overgrowth relationship. Fishtail selenite requires very specific chemical and temperature conditions to form, and its occurrence as a coating on already-formed quartz indicates a clear shift in the mineralizing environment. This type of sequential growth—quartz followed by gypsum—is uncommon, and examples showing both minerals clearly expressed and intact are especially scarce.
The selenite blades display clean twinning and sharp edges, draped naturally across the quartz without obscuring the underlying crystal form. Transparency and luster remain strong across both minerals, and the specimen shows no visible damage or repair. The association is readable and coherent, rather than crowded or fragmentary.
